Upper School Spanish Teacher Guides Students To Perfect Scores On AP Test

Upper School Spanish Teacher Esteban Longoria saw 100 percent of his Spanish IV students score a five, the highest score achievable, on their AP Spanish Language And Culture Exam last spring.  A grade of five is very significant, as it earns the student a course credit when they enroll at many colleges or universities in the country.

Having all students score a five is an accomplishment very few teachers can say they’ve made. Mr. Longoria attributes this success to the strong students he teaches at Kinkaid and to a talented Spanish department that prepares the students well. Mr. Longoria visits regularly with the teachers in each grade to help coordinate the curriculum.

Starting in 2014, the exam was changed to include Culture as the main focus in order to reflect our globalized society.

He does not employ any unconventional teaching methods to help students prep for the exam; rather, he varies the activities done in class during the year so they’re able to absorb the language at a high level.

“I also teach some strategies to make sure that they’re relaxed. Providing sufficient practices from all of the sections of the AP Exam, makes them feel more confident and prepared,” says Longoria.

A competitor at heart, Longoria also feels he was able to bring out the best in his students by posting the scores of previous classes.  “I was also a gymnastics coach so I feel like they got little motivational speeches from the coach in me,” says Longoria. “Now that the bar has been set pretty high last year, it’s going to be tough to match that.”

Traditionally, Kinkaid students perform exceptionally well on national AP exams. Of the 586 AP exams administered during the 2014-15 school year, 93 percent of students scored a three or higher, while 71 percent scored a four or a five. A grade of three earns credit at some colleges, a four at more schools.

On Wednesday, March 9th through Friday, March 11th, the Kinkaid Robotics FTC team competed in the South Super-Regional tournament held in San Antonio, Texas. Also participating in this tournament were 71 other schools, home-school groups and neighborhood teams from the 12 southern states.

The team finished the tournament with a 3-3 record.  In addition to the on-field performance, the teams made a presentation to the event judges. The team was assessed on their outreach, their robot's design and other factors. Out of the 72 teams, the Kinkaid team earned 2nd place for the Rockwell Collin Innovate Award. This ranking earned the team an invitation to the FTC World Championship

The students who were involved at this tournament were:

Daniel King '19
Julian Meyers '19
Jamie Moseley '18
Nikita Munsif '20
Christos Papandreou '18
Paul Thompson '18
Joseph Wagnon '19

Others who worked and provided support leading up to this tournament include Charlie Finch '19 and John Churay '16.

The FTC World Championship will held in St. Louis from April 27th - April 30th. At this tournament, the team will be competing against the best 127 other schools and home school and neighborhood groups from the four regions across the US plus teams from 15 countries.

About the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award:
The Rockwell Collins Innovate Award celebrates a Team that not only thinks outside the box, but also has the ingenuity and inventiveness to make their designs come to life. This judged award is given to the Team that has the most innovative and creative Robot design solution to any or all specific field elements or components in the FTC game. Elements of this award include elegant design, robustness and ‘out of the box’ thinking related to design. This award may address the design of the whole Robot or of a sub-assembly attached to the Robot. The creative component must work consistently, but a Robot does not have to work all the time during matches to be considered for this award. The Team’s Engineering Notebook should be marked with journal entries to show the design of the component(s) and the Team’s Robot in order to be eligible for this award, and entries should describe succinctly how the Team arrived at that solution.

Required criteria for the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award:

  • Team must demonstrate respect and Gracious Professionalism towards everyone they encounter at an FTC event.
  • Team must submit an Engineering Notebook with an Engineering Section that documents the design process and how the Team arrived at their design solution.
  • Robot or Robot sub-assembly must be elegant and unique in its design.
  • Creative component must be stable, robust, and work reliably.
  • Robot design is efficient and consistent with Team plan and strategy.

Colin Lawler '18 was named a Prep All American at the Prep Nationals Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 25 by placing 4th in the Tournament finals.  Coach Bobby Eggleston said, "Colin wrestled superbly, winning his first match vs the six seed.  Colin then faced the number 3 seeded wrestler from national power Wyoming Seminary, who had beaten Colin the previous day in a close match.  Revenge was sweet as Colin was in control the entire match before pinning the three seed.  Wow!  It was impressive.  That put Colin in the 3rd/4th place match and, although he was ahead 1-0 in the 3rd period, he came up one point short.  It was tough because there was an inadvertent whistle dispute at the end of the match, but Colin handled the situation like a true champion and did not let it dampen his spirits as he walked away with a 4th place finish."  Colin's 4th place finish earned him distinction as a Prep All American.

As a team, Kinkaid ended the Tournament with a top 25 finish out of 136 teams, finishing as the highest ranked Texas team in the Tournament.  Congratulations to Colin on his All-American honors and to the entire Kinkaid team on an excellent season!
